Why is The Sub Rooms important?
The Sub Rooms is important for very many reasons. Not only was the building originally funded by public subscription but we actually change and improve people’s lives on a daily basis. Here are some of the reasons why we think we are important:
Community venue
The Sub Rooms is important because we offer a community venue at the centre of the vibrant local arts and cultural scene. We broaden the arts, culture and leisure offering beyond The Sub Rooms so that art, culture and leisure become intertwined with the lives of the community we serve.
Through partnerships with other organisations, we:
- Diversify the local economy and community
- Boost visitor economy
- Promote local pride and community ownership
- Develop skills and creative employment opportunities
We belong to everybody
We embrace people’s existing creativity and encourage them to build on it for the greater good of the communities they live in.
We ensure that people from every background are welcome at The Sub Rooms and are encouraged to deepen their relationship with arts and culture.
We offer opportunities
We create formal opportunities for skills and career progression in the creative industries through partnership with local arts colleges and schools. We offer a rewarding volunteer programme which enables members of the community to contribute and serve our community.
We aim to become one of the central arts providers for the district, where people come to The Sub Rooms to share best practice amongst their fellow peers, for their own career development and the progression of the creative industries that they advocate.
Top quality
We aim to bring together the country’s most creative and innovative companies that offer the highest quality performance and engagement opportunities for all the communities that we serve.
We improve family life
We help to ensure that arts and cultural engagement is embedded within family life on a daily basis. We open people’s eyes to see new things, understand new concepts and broaden their horizons as a result of the artistic and cultural programme that we offer.
Our Team
In order to make our success story happen, we rely on everyone working as a team. The team members include:
You, your family and friends
You, your family and friends, and everyone else who enjoys The Sub Rooms are at the very centre of our team. Whether you come to our ticketed events, enjoy coffee with us on a Tuesday morning, take part in our craft classes, bring your baby to a workshop, or talk to your friends about us, you are the reason we open our doors.
The team
There is just a very small team of permanent staff at The Sub Rooms who each take responsibility for separate areas. During this exciting time of renovation and change, we are working hard to ensure that The Sub Rooms becomes the best that it can be. Everyone within the team is keen to ensure that you have a great time here.
Our volunteers
We are looking for volunteers! Whether it is talking your bookings at the Box Office, welcoming you as you arrive, ensuring your safety while you are here or helping out behind the scenes, our volunteers will become an invaluable part of who we are. The Sub Rooms won’t be The Sub Rooms without volunteers who make things happen on a daily basis. Please join the team now.
Steering Groups
We will soon be developing a series of steering groups who will help guide and shape our journey, ensuring that we are welcoming, accessible and relevant to everyone. These Steering groups will include residents, community groups, special interest and members from diverse communities.
The Trust
The Sub Rooms is managed by The Stroud Subscription Rooms Trust. There are currently 6 Board Members with extensive experience in the arts, cultural sectors, venue development and management, large-scale music events, the legal sector and volunteering and community projects.
