Life After Birth

Theo Clarke & Leah Hazard

In an emotional debate in the House of Commons in October 2023, former MP Theo Clarke broke down in tears as she described being rushed into emergency surgery after the birth of her daughter, terrified she was going to die.

Citing a decline in the quality of maternity care in the UK over the past decade, her campaigning book – “Breaking the Taboo: Why We Need to Talk About Birth Trauma” – aims to start an essential and overdue conversation.

Leah Hazard is a writer and serving NHS midwife whose book, “Hard Pushed: A Midwife’s Story”, details her experiences working on the frontline. An outspoken advocate for improvements in reproductive healthcare, Leah is currently at work on a new book, “Birth Wars”, which will address some of the polarising forces affecting the delivery and experience of perinatal care.

We welcome Theo and Leah to discuss how we can reform early maternity.
